The F-35, built under the Joint Strike Fighter program, is a multi-functional plane with three variants: CTOL (Conventional Takeoff and Landing), STOVL (Short Takeoff, Vertical Landing), and CV (Carrier Takeoff and Landing). Developed as the successor to the AV-8B Harrier II, the F-35B was the first to achieve supersonic flight and STOVL. Deployment of the F-35B began in 2015, and in 2018 the U.S. Marine Corps VMFA-211 "Wake Island Avengers" first used it in combat in Afghanistan. The F-35B is also flown by the U.S., U.K., Italy, and soon Japan, which aims to launch a fighter squadron with it in 2024. The F-35B is gaining worldwide recognition, as it can be used from airfields with short runways and is adaptable to aircraft carriers.
